Course name: General and Inorganic Chemistry
COURSE CONTENT
Fundamental particles of an atom; atomic number, mass number and isotopes. Oxidation numbers. Balancing oxidation, reduction reactions. Nomenclature rules. Avogadro's number.
The mole concept and stoicheiometry. The periodic table. Atomic orbitals. The aufbau principle. The octet rule. Molecular shape and the VSEPR model. Pauling electronegativity. The chemical bonding types. Hybridization. Molecular orbitals. Colligative properties. Equilibrium constants. The Le Châtelier principle. Acids, bases and ions in aqueous solutions. pH scale.
Buffer solutions. Solubility product of ionic salts. Problems on ionic equilibrium. Oxidation, reduction and Electrochemistry. Coordination number, geometry, nomenclature, properties and stability constants of coordination complexes.
LEARNING OUTCOME
The course provides the basic concepts of the chemistry; it is concerned mainly with equilibria in aqueous solutions and, in particular, with the calculations involving i) acid-base equilibrium constants and ii) oxidation and reduction processes. Finally, the course discusses complexes of the d-block metals, in terms of bonding theory,
stereochemistry and biological relevance
