Course name: Clinical Chemistry

COURSE CONTENT

Collection, storage and treatment of the biological samples (blood, urine). Laboratory tests used in various clinical situations, the technical bases of chemical tests for various components of blood and urine, qualitative and quantitative analysis and how to interpret the results. UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Fluorescence, Chemiluminescence and their applications in clinical assays. Analysis of the main metabolites and enzymes and their clinical meaning. Immunometric assays and their applications: Antibodies and antigens, production of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies; methods for separation of free-bound fractions; RIA, IRMA, EIA, EMIT, FIA, enzymatic amplification, streptavidin-biotin system. Separative techniques in clinical chemistry and their applications: electrophoresis of proteins and enzymes, PAGE, Western blotting, immunoelectrophoresis, IEF, Capillary electrophoresis, HPLC, GC. The molecular biology in clinical chemistry and diagnosis of genetic diseases: extraction and analysis of DNA, amplification of DNA (PCR), restriction enzymes, agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Southern blotting, methods for DNA Sequencing (Maxam&Gilbert, Sanger); RFLP and DNA fingerprinting

 

LEARNING OUTCOME

The aim of the course is to provide the student with the knowledge of laboratory medicine and to become familiar with the theoretical background of clinical chemistry tests and hematological laboratory investigations, their practical application and clinical interpretation.

 

CREDITS: Clinical Chemistry consists of 35 hours of lessons (5 CFU). Attendance is mandatory
