Course name: Toxicological Chemistry

COURSE CONTENT

The course considers the chemistry, the metabolic processes, the toxicities and the mechanisms of action of various classes of toxicants.

Contents: General concepts of toxicology. Chemical nature of toxicants. Biochemical transformations. Biochemical mechanisms of toxicity. Biochemistry of mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and teratogenicity. Main classes of toxicants: toxic elements (metals, metalloids, non metals); toxic inorganic compounds; toxic organometallic and organometalloids; toxic organic compounds; Organooxygen, organonitrogen, organohalide, organosulphur and organophosphorus compounds. Indicators of exposure to xenobiotics. Primary and secondary prevention. Biomarkers

LEARNING OUTCOME

Toxicological chemistry is the chemistry of toxic substances. The course bridges the gap between toxicology and chemistry, emphasizing chemical aspects of toxicological phenomena, including fates and effects of xenobiotic chemicals in biological tissue and living systems. Focusing on quantitative structure-activity relationships by relating the chemical structure and physical characteristics of various compounds to their toxic effects, the course provides the foundation for predicting the toxicological effects of toxicants. Moreover, it allows to gain greater knowledge concerning environment and workplace safety.
