COURSE CONTENT

European law and regulatory aspects of cosmetic production. INCI name and labelling rules

Anatomy and physiology  of skin: dermal and epidermal components, structural features of stratum corneum, epidermal lipids. Anatomy and  physiology of hair and its physical properties.

Moisture  and moisturizing ingredients.

Emollient and nourishing products:  chemical  composition of natural oils, butters, and waxes, synthetic oils and silicone derivatives

Surfactants: chemical properties versus skin compatibility. Conditioning agents. General features of toiletries

Preservatives and microbial quality assurance

Gel systems and polymers. Gel emulsions, oil in water and water in oil emulsions: general composition and cosmetic properties.

Sun products, chemical and physical sunscreens, SPF test, UVA PF in vitro test  Anti-aging products and anti-age ingredients (anti-oxidants, vitamins A-C-E, AHAs).

 

LEARNING OUTCOME

The aim of this course is to provide the basic tools for understanding the specific task of ingredients generally  used  in cosmetic products. The chemico-physical properties of cosmetic ingredients together  with the main aspects of cosmetic science, such as European law and labelling rules, anatomy and physiology of skin  and hair, will be discussed in relation to the functional, sensorial and safety requirements of the different categories of cosmetic products.

At the end of the course the student will be confident with the reading of commercial product labels  and bright to recognize the specificity of each distinct cosmetic formulation
