COURSE CONTENT

Introduction to quantitative drug analysis. Safety in the laboratory. Molarity, equivalents, calculus in volumetric analysis. Elements of statistical analysis in the experimental data treatment. Standard solutions.

Volumetric analysis:

Acid-base titrations . Titration curves of acid and bases. Examples according to F.U.

Redox titrations. Permanganometry, Iodimeter, Iodometry, Cerimetry. Examples according to F.U.

Precipitation titrations . Determination of halides by Mohr's, Volhard's methods. Practical aspects, limitations. Examples according to F.U.

Complex-formation titrations employing EDTA. Examples according to F.U.

Instrumental Analysis:

UV-Vis Spectrophotometric analysis: Lambert Beer law, calibration curve construction.

Fluorometry: Excitation and emission spectra. Chemical fluorescence derivatisation of drugs.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy: Quantitative analysis: adding standard methods.

Chromatographic separations. Plate theory. Van Deemter equation. Retention time and capacity factor. HPLC, direct and reversed phase, solvent and elution mode selection. Detectors: Quantitative analysis: internal and external standard methods.

Radiochemical methods.

Extraction separation and quantification of active principles from drug formulations.

 

LEARNING OUTCOME

The student acquires theoretical and practical knowledge for analytical laboratory work, in particular the goal of this course is to prepare students to be able to plan and execute quantitative drug analysis by means of volumetric titrations and instrumental methodologies (UV-Vis, Fluorometry, Atomic Absorption, HPLC, TLC, etc) and determination and quantification of drugs in pharmaceutical formulations and complex matrices
