COURSE CONTENT
Principles of pharmaceutical technology and drug delivery: objectives, preformulation and formulation, inputs and outputs (2 hours).
Quantitative compartmental and non-compartmental pharmacokinetics. Mathematical analysis. Pharmacokinetic parameters (5 hours)
Bioavailability: mechanisms and kinetics of drug absorption. Oral absorption (4 hours).
Drug availability: mathematical elaboration of dissolution, diffusion, swelling, erosion, cleavage. Micelles, cyclodextrins, nanoparticles, solid solutions, liposomes etc. Dissolution test (8 hours).
Pharmaceutical physics, micrometrics. Particle size, porosity, surface area, density, physical state (crystals, polymorphism etc.) DSC, mechanical properties (8 hours).
Technological processes: mixing, milling, desiccation, freeze drying, granulation, , compression (4 hours).
Tablets: equipment and fabrication processes. Chemistry and physicochemical properties of excipents: technological, biopharmaceutical and organolectic excipients. Diluents and fillers, lubricants, anti-adherents and glidants, granulating excipients and binders, deaggregating agents, dyes and pigments, flavouring agents and sweeteners (7).
Monographic classification and properties of tablets: regular, film coated, sugar coated, enteric, effervescent, sublingual, chewingable, special tablets (7 hours).
Capsules: fabrication and classification (3 hours)
Disperse systems: general properties. Physicochemical proeptries, Z potential, DLVO. Stability, flocculation, phase separation, etc. (5 hours)
Emulsions and suspensions. Composition, preparation, storing and use (6 hours).
Injectables: production and classification (5 hours).
Lab Practice: dissolution test, disaggregating test, friability test, particle size (SLS and microscopy), contact angle, polymeric nanoparticle preparation by spray-drying, capsule preparation, granulation, statistical analysis (30 hours).
CREDITS: 10 (8 CFU Lectures + 2 CFU Lab Practice)
