Course name: Physical Chemistry
COURSE CONTENT
The course is devoted first to the definition of the basic principles of physical chemistry and next to the exploration of some selected applications pertaining to thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, quantum mechanics, statistical thermodynamics and spectroscopy. Subjects are presented using a minimum of formal derivations, but mathematical justifications are highlighted whenever possible. Connections to organic, inorganic and biological chemistry are provided. The program is articulated as follows:
- 1. Thermodynamics: 1st and 2nd principle, phase equilibria, properties of solutions, colligative properties, chemical equilibrium, ions and electrons transport phenomena
- 2. Chemical kinetics: reaction rates, kinetic law, enzymatic processes, molecular interpretation of reaction rate constants
- 3. Molecular structure: electronic configurations of atoms and molecules, chemical bonds, intermolecular interactions, statistical thermodynamics
- 4. Spectroscopy: optical spectroscopies, photochemistry, magnetic spectroscopies.
Lesson plans, teacher tips, solved exercises, downloadable teaching material is provided to the students through the course web site (http://www.chimica.unipd.it/antonino.polimeno)
LEARNING OUTCOME
Learning outcomes to be expected from the assiduous and mindful attendance are
