Course name: Organic Chemistry II

COURSE CONTENT

Acid-base chemistry of carbonyl compounds. Inductive and resonance effects; keto-enol tautomerism; alpha halogenations and alkylation; active methylene compounds.

Nucleophilic addition reactions of enolate ions with carbonyl compounds.  Aldol and Claisen condensation.

Nucleophilic addition to alpha-beta unsaturated carbonyl compounds.  1,2 vs 1,4 addition; Michael additions; tandem additions; organocuprates.

Heterocycles. Nomenclature; Alicyclic and aromatic heterocycles. Piridine, diazines, quinoline and isoquinolines, pyrrole, thiophene, furan, indole, benzothiphene, benzofuran, azoles.

 

LEARNING OUTCOME

Aim of the course is to complete and strengthen the basic knowledge of organic chemistry, introducing multi step synthesis and retro synthetic analysis.
