Course name: Biotechnological Drugs

COURSE CONTENT

The course covers the following topics: General principles of biotech processes applied to the production of proteins for therapeutic use. Molecular Biotechnology. Biotech-related technologies. Analytical methodologies for protein drugs characterization. Legal requirements and normative for biotechnological inventions. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for biotech drugs. Biogenerics.

Production and downstream processing of Biotech Therapeutics.

Principal classes of protein therapeutics: Emzymes, Hormones, Cytokines, Growth factors, Vaccines, Monoclonal Antibodies. Selected monographies on approved and developmental compounds.

Principal classes of nucleic acids-based biotech drugs. Antisense. Aptamers. siRNA.

Literature searches. Databases:  how to search databases for technical and patent information,  how to read and interpret a patent document.

 

LEARNING OUTCOME

The course aims to enable students to develop a sound knowledge relative to the production, characterization, manipulation and development of novel drugs and diagnostics produced by the use of established and innovative biotechnological processes.
