Course name: Protein Engineering
COURSE CONTENT
The course will deal with important methods and techniques (both molecular-biological and chemical) that can be used to study protein structure and function and to develop proteins with new and useful properties. The following subjects will be treated:
- basics of recombinant expression systems
- chemical synthesis of peptides and proteins
- chemical modifications of proteins
- production of proteins and peptides with non-natural amino acids
- rational design of new proteins (site-directed mutagenesis)
- directed evolution and high-throughput library screening
- engineering proteins for enhanced stability and better catalytic properties
- engineering antibodies.
All techniques will be illustrated by giving examples of applications.
LEARNING OUTCOME
Students should learn the methodological approaches of protein engineering and their applications in studies of protein structure-function relationships and in the design of modified proteins for practical use in medicine and biotechnology.
