The Faculty of Pharmacy yesterday and today
Although the University of Padua is more than 780 years old, the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy is much more recent.
As a matter of fact, until 1874, courses in pharmaceutical subjects were held at the Faculty of Medicine, Surgery and Pharmaceutics. In 1879, due to the considerable growth of knowledge in chemical and pharmaceutical sciences, the University of Padua established a degree course in Chemistry and Pharmacy. In 1931, it became clear that the two disciplines should be differentiated and, for the first time in Italy, a degree course in Pharmacy was instituted. In 1935, combining with the School of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Pharmacy itself was established.
In 1976, the degree course in Pharmacy was flanked by that of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technologies, aiming to prepare professionals for research centres, and to develop and to produce in pharmaceutical companies.
In 1997, in cooperation with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, a Diploma in Herbal Technologies was activated and, in 1998, a Diploma in Scientific Information on Pharmaceutics.
In collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the three-year degree course in Health Biotechnologies enriched the training offered by the Faculty of Pharmacy.
At present time, the Faculty of Pharmacy offers more than 150 classes, many of which involve practical work in highly equipped laboratories.
In addition to its conventional academic courses, every year the Faculty of Pharmacy, organizes several courses dedicated to updating and training professionals in several pharmaceutical sectors.
According to their individual interests and ambitions, our students will be able to develop competencies and proficiency in all drug related professions: from the pharmacy desk to the industrial world or basic scientific research.
Our ambition is to foster in our studends high professionality by stimulating critical thinking and problem solving attitude.
